Metals and Non-Metals in Periodic Classification

Metals and Non Metals in Periodic Classification:

As there are basically three types of elements. They are :

Metals:

These are electropositive elements i.e. they can lose electrons easily. They posses lusture, ductility, malleability and good conductor of heat and electricity. They have low ionization energy means they can lose electrons with less requirement of energy and hence are metallic in nature.

Non-Metals:

These are electronegative elements. They are non  lustrous, brittle and poor conductor of heat and electricity. They have high ionization energy and hence  have tendency to gain electrons rather than losing them.

Metalloids:

These have property of both metals and non-metals. They are used as semiconductors in industries. Example Silicon, Germanium.

Trends in  metallic and non- metallic character :

From moving  top to bottom of the periodic table their occur increase in the size elements. Due to this increase in the size there is increase in the distance between nucleus and electrons and hence elements can lose electrons easily and therefore metallic character increases while moving from top to the bottom.

From right to left due to decrease in the size of the elements tendency to lose electrons decreases and hence metallic character decreases.
